A purse can be quilted with the help of a few basic techniques. Some of them are easier than others and will suit the starters.
Antique Method.
The basic muslin fabric should be a 14" x 14" square. Lay a piece of fabric in the corner of the muslin. Now, lay a second patch either under or over the first piece by a little more than 1/2". Continue this procedure until the entire muslin is covered with pieces of fabric that you pin in place. If some trimmings, such as lace, ribbon, etc. is to be attached then pin them at the same time.
Landscape Method.
Start from a corner and keep the patch, pressing under the edges. Go on placing the patches and fill the bottom of the basic muslin fabric. While putting the quilting patches, tuck one side under another and press the edges that are exposed. Keep patching until the muslin has no empty space. If it cannot be done by a machine, then turn them, press with iron and sew by hand.
Sew and Flip Method.
The basic muslin cloth should measure not more than 12" x 12". The size of the patch should be about 4" x 4" and 5 sided. Lay the second patch on the first one with right sides together. Stitch along one side leaving about 1/4" at the ends of this fabric patch. Never backstitch, as it may be necessary to remove some stitches from the ends. Keep on adding patches and remove the excess fabric from previous patches. This is one of the fastest method.
